It is an important airport for national and international air traffic, being used by budget airlines as an alternative to the New York airports. AirportsĪbout three kilometers from the south of the city center lies the Newark Liberty International Airport. Newark is also a center of higher education, including a university and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. An interesting fact is that the Newark Bay is jointly being exploited with New York. The Port of Newark is the largest port for trans-shipment of the northeast of the United States. The stake of (manufacturing) industry has been reduced, though, there is still a large brewery of beer giant Anheuser-Busch. One of world's largest insurance companies, Prudential, has its head office in the city. The city´s economy is diverse, the services sector is the main industry, with great emphasis on banking and insurance corporations. Manhattan is situated eight kilometers to the east, Staten Island is three kilometers to the south. Newark is located in the northeast of the United States, on the Passaic River that flows into Newark Bay. ![]() This is because Newark is located in an enormous urban area which includes New York, Jersey City and Paterson. The city has 275,000 inhabitants, the city, however, does not give the impression of being a medium-sized city. Newark is the largest city of the American state of New Jersey and is an important economic center, however, the city is often being surpassed by its bigger neighbor New York.
